Workshop 1: Many voices, one meaning - the case for translation, codeswitching and borrowing 10:00-12:00

Try as we might, we cannot stop our learners from immediately translating, perhaps with a burning urge to reach for the Leo.org app or comparing the language we teach, to what is already familiar in their L1. But why should we? This workshop takes a alternative look at the role of our learners' first language in the intake of a second or other, argues how this can aid rather than hinder learning, help us to identify difficulties and ultimately test their proficiency.

Lunch break from 12:00 to 14:00 (lunch not included in fee)

Workshop 2: A brave new world - slang in assessment 14:00-16:00

The dominance of English on the internet has shown than new vocabulary and conventions can appear literally overnight (covfefe). As a consequence we, as educators, might feel cornered in a need to explain, that while being abundant and 'cool', the language our students are increasingly exposed to is not always the most appropriate - at least, not yet! We’ll look at the latest developments in language, contemplate what’s acceptable and hear what the big people at well known assessment boards have to say.
