Sarah Plochl: The Lexical Approach
What came first: the grammar or the words? Do we learn structures and then fill them with words, or do we learn words first and the structures follow? This workshop explores this intriguing egg-and-hen question of teaching and learning languages.
The lexical approach takes the view that a greater emphasis should be placed on teaching vocabulary and the “grammar of words” over traditional grammar. But what does that mean for our classroom and our syllabus?
Sarah Plochl of HELTA in Hamburg invites you to explore with her the interesting ways in which we can do more with vocabulary. Though by no means an expert in the area, Sarah recently attended a two-day workshop with Hugh Dellar in Berlin and is eager to share some of the takeaways from the seminar by the co-author of Teaching Lexically and co-writer of coursebook series such as Outcomes.
This will be a practical session with some theoretical input, plenty of group work, and hopefully a host of fresh ideas for your teaching.
Biographical information: Sarah Plochl is a trainer and Director of Studies at English Language Institute Hamburg. She has a background in linguistics and teaches mostly in company classes, ESP and one-to-one business students. In her “spare” time, Sarah serves on the committee of HELTA, the Hamburg English Language Teachers Association, and is about to complete her Delta Cambridge Diploma, with a specialisation in teaching one-to-one.
