We are very excited to be holding Members Day, one of ELTAF’s signature events on Saturday, 26 September at the ISM in Frankfurt.

Members Day is YOUR day with workshops facilitated by members for members. We try to give the day a very personal feel with a lot of opportunity to network. This event is also open to other ELTA members!!

Schedule:

09:30 – 10:00                 Registration

10:00 – 10:15                  Rhiannon / Welcome

10:15 – 11:15

Workshop A1: Judith Mader & Rudi Camerer – How CULTURES come into ELF

There is a lot of research into how culture-based values, norms etc. are expressed in Englishes [plural!] but how dealing with cultural diversity and avoiding culture-based misunderstandings can be put into practice in English teaching is another matter. This practical workshop will provide ideas on how to do this using ELF (English as a lingua franca).

Workshop A2: Jacki Merrit – Protect your voice – A practical workshop for teachers

This practical workshop is designed to help teachers understand how to use their voice safely, effectively, and confidently in the classroom. Participants will learn simple voice-care strategies, healthy speaking techniques, breathing and projection exercises, and ways to prevent vocal strain during long teaching days.

11:15 – 11:45                   Break

11:45 – 12:45

Workshop B1: Ridha Mejri – Rethinking Business English Training in the age of AI

This session explores how AI is changing not just how professionals write emails, reports or presentations but also what it means to communicate effectively in international business settings. Drawing on real-world examples, we will examine how Business English trainers can move beyond language
instruction toward developing learners’ AI literacy, critical thinking, intercultural sensitivity and ethical communication. Participants will be invited to reflect
on how AI can support rather than replace human expertise in business interactions.

Workshop B2: Maria Schmitz – Teaching the Feel of English: Rhythm, Pragmatics, and Thinking in English

To help teachers understand and teach English as a living language shaped by rhythm,
interaction, culture, and thought. At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • explain the five core dimensions of the Feel of English,
  • identify classroom techniques that support each
    dimension,
  • design short activities for their own learners,
  • adapt activities for different proficiency levels.

12:45 – 13:45                   Lunch

13:45 – 14:45

Workshop C1: Steve Carden – From Great Lessons to Great Learning Experiences

What business clients expect from language training today. In this session, we will explore how changing workplace realities are influencing expectations of language training and discuss practical ways trainers can support learners both inside and beyond the lesson. Using real-world examples, participants will reflect on how a more integrated learning experience can increase learner engagement, support development goals and demonstrate values to stakeholders.

Workshop C2: Suzanne Vetter-M’Caw – Student-centered teaching

This is a workshop focusing on how to tailor lessons to the learner/group’s needs using an adaptive approach. Rather than following a rigid lesson plan, the teacher is driven by the learner’s interests and adapts each lesson accordingly. Irrespective of whether a textbook is used, or photocopies or material provided by the students, the printed word is just the starting point. We will be looking at some concrete examples and sharing our own
experiences. Participants will hopefully take away new ideas and feel motivated to add an element of spontaneity to their lessons.

14:45 – 15:00                   Refreshments

15:00 – 16:00                   ELT Cafe

Facilitated by Larry Henry – As with last Members Day, the last hour of our Members Day will be fully devoted to our members and their concerns. In this facilitated discussion in small flexible groups, you will be able to voice and share your ideas and opinions on certain ELT-related topics e.g. digitalization, pay, marketing, running your own business etc.
The results will be shared at the end with all the participants. Come and make it a success!

16:00 – 16:30                   Sekt & Chat
