From Podmap to Podcast: Turning Language into a Structured, Visible, and Credible Syllabus with Lewis Jaquest

Emergent language is often associated with flexibility, responsiveness, and learner- led interaction. Yet many teachers particularly in professional and business contexts still hesitate to fully embrace it. The concern is rarely what happens in the lesson, but what happens across lessons:

How do we make learning visible?
How do we demonstrate progress to learners and stakeholders?
And how do we bring continuity and structure to something that is, by nature, emergent?

This 2-hour workshop introduces PODMAP, a practical framework developed alongside the Emergent Language Toolkit, designed to capture, organise and develop emergent language beyond the point of need.

Rather than asking “What am I going to teach next?”, PODMAP reframes the process:
What have we actually uncovered so far—and where can it go next?”

Participants will explore how learner-generated language can be systematically captured, revisited and developed into a coherent learning journey. Over time, this process supports the creation of a reverse- engineered, analytic syllabus—built from authentic communication and real needs, while maintaining a clear sense of direction and progression.

The result is an approach that retains the flexibility of emergent, task-based learning, while introducing:

  • visibility of learning and progress
  • continuity across lessons
  • sustainability in how language is revisited and developed

Ultimately, this helps teachers demonstrate impact more clearly—both to learners and to professional stakeholders—strengthening trust and enhancing pedagogical credibility.

In this hands-on workshop, participants will:

  • experience the framework from a learner perspective
  • work with real examples of emergent language
  • explore practical ways to integrate it into their own teaching contexts
  • reflect on how to balance responsiveness with structure in a principled, professional way

This session is particularly relevant for teachers working in business, 1:1, or small- group contexts who want to maintain spontaneity while making learning more visible, trackable and professionally credible.

Biodata:

Lewis Jaquest has worked in ELT since 2007 and founded his language and training business, Wordsmithery.elt, in 2019.

He focuses on fostering learner autonomy through task-based and emergent language approaches, helping teachers bring more responsiveness, structure, and visibility to their classrooms.

Lewis has presented twice at IATEFL, including in Edinburgh (2025) and most recently in Brighton (2026). He has also delivered a range of talks and workshops for teaching associations across Germany. This workshop is an extended, hands-on development of his recent IATEFL Brighton talk.

He is the creator of the Emergent Language Toolkit course, an online course designed to support interactive, creative, and learner-led online teaching. The course supports teaching professionals, academic managers, and business English trainers in developing repeatable frameworks and practical techniques for working confidently and systematically with emergent language.
