Richard Tily: Classroom activities that really work!

What are your favorite classroom activities? The ones you have either developed yourself or perhaps just adapted or improved. Can you briefly present some of them within five to ten minutes? At the end of this session, we should all then be well-armed with a full bag to help our learners, increase our market value and free up more time for ourselves!

You are welcome to send in your contribution even if you are not able to attend the workshop. There will be a summary of activities made available in the ELTAF magazine and as a PDF on the website.

Ian McMaster: From Theory to Practice: Using Business English Tips at Work

One of the biggest problems in business English training is helping clients to move from learning in the classroom to improving their communicative performance at work. A recent series of articles in Business Spotlight, now available as an e-book, tried to help in this respect by giving readers specific tasks to carry out at work and asking them to reflect on their performance. The aim is to create a learning cycle that leads to more effective and appropriate communication. In this workshop, we will look at this learning cycle, present relevant activities and discuss the effectiveness of such an approach.

Biographical information:
Ian McMaster has been editor-in-chief of the bi-monthly business communication magazine Business Spotlight (www.business-spotlight.de) since its launch in March 2001.

Ian joined Spotlight Verlag (www.spotlight-verlag.de) in Munich in 1992. He was editor-in-chief of the monthly English magazine Spotlight (www.spotlight-online.de) from 1995 to 2003 and again from 2006 to 2009.

Ian is a former co-ordinator of IATEFL-BESIG and is the co-author with Bob Dignen of the books Effective International Business Communication and Communication for International Business (both Collins), and of the e-book English for Business: 100 Tips for Effective Communication (Spotlight Verlag).
